Our Universe

• The universe encompasses the entirety of space, matter, energy and time.

• Scientists believe the universe came into existence about 13.8 billion years ago during an event known as the big bang.

• Following the big bang, the first subatomic particles and atoms began to form, followed by the first stars and planetary systems.

• The observable universe (the part we can see) is estimated to be approximately 93 billion light-years in diameter and contains more than a trillion galaxies.

• Our solar system is located in the Milky Way Galaxy, where our Sun is just one of 100-400 billion stars.

• Our understanding of the universe has changed enormously over time, particularly since the advent of the telescope in the 17th century.
