Defence Against Pathogens: The Immune System

  • In this unit we will also be looking at the main body system that is involved in the body’s immune response – the lymphatic system.
  • The lymphatic system contains macrophages that digest invading microorganisms and lymphocytes which produce antibodies.
  • Macrophages are part of the body’s innate immunity, which provides non-specific protection against pathogens.
  • Lymphocytes are part of the body’s acquired immunity, which provides specific protection against pathogens.
  • The lymphatic system, together with other structures, substances and processes involving other body systems, make up what is generally referred to as the body’s immune system.
