The Relationship Between Frequency, Wavelength and Velocity
- We saw in the lesson ‘Waves’ that the frequency, wavelength and velocity of a wave are mathematically related. Therefore, by knowing two of these quantities, we can calculate the third.
- To calculate frequency:
- To calculate wavelength:
- To calculate velocity:
- We also saw that this relationship means that frequency and wavelength are inversely proportional.
- Therefore, sound waves with lower frequencies have longer wavelengths and sound waves with higher frequencies have shorter wavelengths.
