The following questions will require you to conduct your own research. Choose any that interest you. Write your answers in your notebook, or create a poster or presentation.

Topic 1

Graphite and diamond are two forms of carbon with very different physical properties. Describe the different arrangement of carbon atoms in these substances and explain how this accounts for their physical differences.

Topic 2

Research some of the physical properties of metals, such as electrical and thermal conductivity, lustre, malleability and ductility. Relate these properties to the way the atoms are arranged.

Topic 3

Substances such as sodium chloride (salt) and silicon dioxide (quartz) are hard, yet brittle. Explain how this relates to the type of bonding between the atoms of these compounds.
