The following questions will require you to conduct your own research. Choose any that interest you. Write your answers in your notebook, or create a poster or presentation.

Topic 1

What is a wave’s period? Write the mathematical relationship between period and frequency. Draw a graphical representation of a wave showing time on the x-axis instead of distance and label the wave’s period.

Topic 2

Research how seismic waves have been used to determine the structure of Earth’s interior. What are the different properties of the different types of seismic waves that have enabled scientists to determine the state of matter of the different layers? Draw a diagram showing the different layers of Earth’s interior and the passage of seismic waves through them.

Topic 3

Waves are usually represented as sine waves. Draw graphical representations of the following wave functions: cosine, tangent, inverse sine, inverse cosine and inverse tangent. How are these functions related to each other?
