The following questions will require you to conduct your own research. Choose any that interest you. Write your answers in your notebook, or create a poster or presentation.

Topic 1

Use Google Maps to determine the distance from your home to your school. Calculate what Google determines your average speed would be when travelling by car, bicycle and foot. Then use Google’s ‘measure distance’ function to determine the ‘linear distance’ (displacement) of your school from your home. How does it compare with the distance travelled?

Topic 2

Research how surveyors use electronic distance measurement (EDM) to accurately measure distances. How do these methods compare with older methods using 100-foot metal tapes?

Topic 3

How does a speedometer measure a car’s speed? Compare this to how a speed camera records a car’s speed.
