The following questions will require you to conduct your own research. Choose any that interest you. Write your answers in your notebook, or create a poster or presentation.
Topic 1
Create a list of all the types of kinetic and potential energy you interact with in an average day. For each type of energy (for example, electrical kinetic energy), give at least one example of how you interact with it (for example, to recharge your phone).
Topic 2
What is the scientific definition of a joule? What is the scientific definition of a calorie? What is the mathematical relationship between joules and calories?
Topic 3
Research different types of food and the energy contained in a ‘standard serving’. Then research the approximate amounts of energy ‘burned’ during different activities, such as walking, running and sleeping. Finally, calculate the time a person would have to do each activity to burn the equivalent amount of energy obtained when consuming a standard serving of each food type. Present your results in tables similar to those shown below.
