Measuring Forces

  • The units for measuring forces are called newtons, which have the symbol N.
  • These units are named after the famous physicist Isaac Newton.
  • Forces have both a magnitude (amount) and a direction.
  • When drawing diagrams showing a force acting on an object, it is therefore necessary to include an arrow to indicate the direction of the force.
  • Often there is more than one force acting on an object. Therefore, an arrow is required to show the direction of each force.
