Introduction to Biology

  • Biology is the study of living things.
  • There are many branches of biology, which vary in what they focus on and the methods they use.
  • Biology can involve different types of organisms.
  • For example, zoology is the study of animals, botany is the study of plants, mycology is the study of fungi and microbiology is the study of microorganisms such as bacteria.
  • Biology can involve different scales of observation.
  • For example, cell biology is the study of living things at the microscopic scale, researching the tiny structures that living things are composed of, whereas ecology can involve the study of vast regions of the earth, looking at how living things interact with each other and their environment.
  • Biology can focus on different processes.
  • For example, biochemistry is the study of molecules and chemical reactions in living things, genetics is the study of how characteristics are passed on between generations and evolution is the study of how organisms change over time.
